TT Digest: 3G vs WiFi, Tablet for Whom ?

WiFi vs 3G
In US and other countries WiFi networks are available all over the country and people prefer it because 3G services are costly and WiFi is more reliable as it is backed by wired broadband network.

In India Wifi hotspots are rarely available and not really affordable (check out Aircel Wifi tariff).

3G(HSPA/EVDO) services are damn costly at its initial phase and 3G is not available everywhere like 2G networks. So both WiFi and 3G in India are in nascent stage. These also say why tablets or mobiles with Wifi only cannot make good sale.

Tablets – For Whom?

Tablet market in India is booming, and market is crowded with desi and international brands. MNCs already launched their products to India like Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Dell Streak, HTC Flyer, Blackberry Playbook, Motorola Xoom, Acer Iconia Huawei Mediapad etc.

Indian companies also are in the race. Olive launched Olivepad almost 1 year ago. HCL, Spice, Accord, Beetel are also joining or to join the tablet race. Recent additions are Chirag Tango and EAFT MagicTile Marathon tablet. But internationally acclaimed Notion Ink Adam is messed up with its poor manufacturing and marketing strategy.

In spite of the heat from tablet, PC & laptop market remains steady. Because tablets do not have key features like USB ports, CD/DVD drives (it still make sense in India despite presence of pen drives/portable drives/SSD drives), upgrading memory! Tablets are essentially a content consumption device than a content creation device. After PC/laptop and mobile phone tablets are 3rd kind of device, but it does not replace others.

Factors such as spreading broadband access and usage, increased affordability and availability, local contents etc are the main driving force behind tablets.

HP Pavilion dm1z

Tablets are taking the world by storm. Even corporate users are buying them in order to replace their bulky laptops. True, notebooks aren't very convenient to carry around, but are tablets really worth the hype surrounding them? After spending a few days with the iPad 2 and Acer Iconia Tab, my answer is no. Well, they do have a slim profile and faster CPUs, but at the end of the day they are only good for playing around with.
If you are looking for a portable device to get your work done, then you must check out netbooks. These devices are essentially compact laptops that sacrifice the optical drive to achieve the portability. The initial Atom-based netbooks were good for performing tasks such as web browsing and data handling. However, they failed to please users who were ready to pay a premium for additional goodies such as HD video playback and better multitasking. The situation changed with NVIDIA's ION, which brought some much-needed energy to Intel's platform. Sadly, the lack of love between the two companies let the platform down.

Intel was dominating the desktop market, but it had a chasm between its powerful Core processor family and Atom CPUs. Technically, i3 ULV (Ultra-Low Voltage) CPUs are present, but they're too expensive for practical use. This gave AMD a good chance to go head-on with Intel using its much-expected Fusion. However, the company took its time to deliver Atom's nemesis. Actually, it took too long, as the thing was announced way back in 2006. Nonetheless, as the saying goes: der sahi per durust sahi.

Finally, we have this HP netbook that comes with AMD's promise of full HD playback and some gaming capabilities. Let's find out whether it justifies its premium price tag of Rs 10,000 more than a basic netbook.

Build Quality And Design

The retail box comes with a netbook and power brick. When closed, the device measures 11.4" (l) x 8.4" (w) x 1.2" (d). It sports an elegant design and colour scheme. The lid features a semi-gloss finish and a rubbery texture that feels far better than the usual glossy laptops. Moreover, this also helps it remain immune to fingerprints.

Despite the use of plastic, the gadget feels very sturdy. This is due to the use of good quality materials. Additionally, the curved body makes this 1.6 kg device feel comfortable while holding it. The hinge is well-built and enables the display to be reclined at an angle of 180 degrees.

The inner bezel has a silver finish that goes well with the rest of the black body. It sports a webcam, cam light, and microphone. The island-style keyboard is designed to make the most of the available space. The keys are big enough to avoid typos. HP has managed to offer two full-sized [SHIFT] keys on the keyboard. However, [HOME], [END], [PAGE UP], and [PAGE DOWN] are nowhere to be seen. This is not an issue though, as the combination of [Fn] + arrow keys make up for them. For example, [Fn] + [UP] for [PAGE UP].

The trackpad is reasonably big and contains two mouse buttons that are virtually indistinguishable, except for a raised line indicating where they start. This helps maintain continuity in the design. Oh, and the trackpad can perform some pinch-zoom tricks. In contrast to most laptops, the dm1z's back panel lacks any screws; just slide a button on the rear and the panel opens up, revealing the hard drive, RAM, and other components. This is heaven for people who like to mod their machines.

Overall, the design and build quality is quite pleasant. With a backlit keyboard, it would have been perfect.Display And Sound

The 11.6" LED backlit screen offers pixel dimensions of 1366x768. This HD-capable screen sets you free from cropped videos and web pages. The glossy display offers impressive brightness, but it's prone to glare when kept opposite a light source. Viewing angles are strictly ok, and it starts losing colours beyond 45 degrees.

Surprisingly, the Altec Lancing sound strip on the front edge of the dm1z sounds superb. It's very loud for a system of this size. Additionally, some Dolby wizardry adds depth to the sound - great for enjoying music and movies, and you won't really need to pull out the earphones from your pocket that often.

Performance

The configuration we tested had 2 GB RAM, a 320 GB (7200 rpm) hard drive, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 6-cell lithium ion battery. The main attraction, of course, is AMD's much touted APU (Accelerated Processing Unit), which the company likes to call Fusion. In the dm1z's case, it integrates a 1.6 GHz dual-core E350 CPU and Radeon HD 6310 GPU on the same die, thus improving data transfer rates while reducing power consumption.

Little wonder then, that I had no problem switching between programs while running Photoshop, Word,  an MP3 player, IrfanView, and IE9 with 15 open tabs. Additionally, just for the sake of testing, I also played HD content in VLC player, with still no sign of a slowdown. This product humbles Atom-based netbooks, which choke even with Photoshop and five open tabs in IE9.The Raedeon HD 6310 GPU enables smooth 1080p video playback, and also has an HDMI port. Moreover, when it comes to gaming, the dm1z simply shreds Atom-based systems to pieces. Quake 4 and World of WarCraft ran without any lag even on high settings. What's more, even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was playable at an average framerate of 22 when set to the native resolution of 1366x768. This isn't something that you need from a netbook, but something that you want! The tiny webcam is good enough to video chat on Skype. The small LED actually helps in low light. The microphone is sensitive, and my friend at the other end was able to hear me properly.

The dm1z manages to stay cool even after hours of continuous use. The vent is designed to keep the heat away from your body. It's not like those stupid laptops whose vents roast your lap. However, the fan runs constantly and is audible in a quiet environment. Perhaps HP was skeptical about AMD's heating issues, generally observed in earlier chipsets.

One annoying thing about the laptop is the amount of bloatware that comes pre-installed. It includes random games, CyberLink DVD suite, and Times Reader, and the count goes up to almost 30.Battery Life
Considering the amount of raw power on offer, don't expect this netbook to match the battery performance of its Atom-based counterparts. I've seen some of the latter devices last as long as 10 hours on a single charge and under moderate use. Under similar conditions, the dm1z manages to provide slightly more than 8 hours, with the display brightness set to normal. However, under heavy use including sessions of COD:MW2, HD video playback, and lots of browsing using a hotspot, the battery lasted for 6 hours. The 6-cell battery's performance is quite good, and shows that AMD has finally managed to achieve a balance between fancy speeds and battery performance.
Apart from the real world experience, we also ran the Battery Eater benchmark. During the tests, the brightness was set to maximum. The test runs in two modes: Reader mode basically scrolls through a text file until the battery runs out. This represents moderate, or day-to-day usage. Classic mode renders a 3D model in real-time, thus subjecting the system to stress. The test results are as follows:Verdict

After spending a few weeks with the HP Pavilion dm1z, I can tell that AMD's Fusion has lived up to the hype. HP has succeeded in providing a nice design and sturdy build quality. The HD video playback is flawless, and the netbook is good to go when it comes to gaming. Moreover, it handles multitasking with ease, without taking a toll of the battery performance.

If you've had enough of tablets and are looking for a supercharged netbook for work and some fun, the dm1z provides great value for money. On the other hand, if you don't need fancy features and performance, it makes sense to buy a pocket-friendly Atom netbook.

Mozilla To Develop Mobile OS

This open source project will be reminiscent of the Google Chrome OS.

Makers of the renowned Firefox browser and the Thunderbird email client, Mozilla, are always looking to bring in new features and improvements for their products. Mozilla Corp has now decided to launch a mobile operating system of its own, which will compete with the likes of iOS, Android, and WP7. The best part about this mobile OS is that it will be completely open source, and will be used for the development of HTML5 applications. The company wants to encourage developers to write codes on this platform for applications which will work almost like native apps. It seems like a valiant effort by Mozilla to bring something new to the table.
Google introduced Chrome OS for a similar purpose, but Mozilla could improve upon it. For those of you who are wondering what this upcoming OS is going to be called; for now it's known as Boot To Gecko or B2G. There are plans to write new codes for this new OS but at the same time, some codes from Android will be borrowed. The idea does have the miles to go a long way, but unless Mozilla seeks refuge of major companies, it could easily get lost in the wind. The concept is pretty reminiscent of Google's open source Chrome OS, which was launched to build desktop apps with the help of web apps. However, Mozilla wants to improve upon the idea by developing a mobile OS which would guide to build web apps based on HTML5. The company reminds us that the idea is pretty fresh, and that it will keep us updated on any new developments on the platform. It will be interesting to see what Mozilla will ultimately come up with.

Only 1.2 Million Honeycomb Tablets In The Wild

This comes even as 6 months have passed since the launch of the platform.

The number of Android smartphones in the market is increasing at a rate of knots, but sadly the same is not the case with Android tablets. It's already known that Android tablets are not available in large numbers in the market. With the head-start that the iPad has received, it has been quite hard for the Droid tablets to catch up in terms of sales. With the likes of the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Acer Iconia Tab, and others launching very recently, things have seemed a bit better, but not so much as to brag about it.

Now, we have access to the number of Android tablets that are in circulation around the world which gives us an estimate of the droids with bigger displays. Google's Larry Page recently mentioned that there are about 135 million Android devices in the market, which includes both tablets and handsets. Taking into account the stats obtained from the Android Market according to which 0.9% of the devices that accessed the application store between June 24 and July 1 had display sizes of 7"and above or Xlarge. When we crunch both the numbers i.e. multiply 130 million by 0.9, we get a mere 1.21 million and odd. This certainly shows that there aren't enough Android tablets out there.

For the open sourced nature of the Android platform, this is a very disappointing number. However, we must mention here that this is an approximation and the real number may differ. Also worth a mention is that contrary to these numbers, Samsung has previously reported that it has shipped (not sold) about 2 million of the first gen Galaxy Tabs. This however doesn't necessarily mean that all the units have been sold. The calculations here however refer to the Android 3.0 and 3.1 tablets that have been sold so far, thus excluding tablets such as the Galaxy Tab. This number also doesn't include the tablets that didn't head over to the Android Market during the last week of June till July 1.

The numbers are a bit alarming for Google, considering the fact that Honeycomb was launched roughly 6 months ago, though countries such as India were a bit late to the party. Seems like there aren't enough manufacturers showing faith with Google's tablet oriented OS. However, that could change in the coming days with manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, and others geared up for the launch of Android 3.1 tablets. The companies need to launch the tablets in appropriate markets to make a difference in sales. Google has learnt from its mistakes after Android 3.0 and hence launched Android 3.1 with improved features, which brings a lot of newness to the tablet version of Android. Head over to GigaOm to get a brief idea as to how these numbers are calculated.

Xperia X10 Gingerbread Update May Be Out This Week

The 2.3 update is said to bring a bunch of new features.

Sony Ericsson recently showed off the features that are going to come with the Gingerbread update for the Xperia X10. The company mentioned that the update will be rolled out during August, but it now seems that SE will provide the update earlier than expected. SE mentioned on its Facebook page that the update could be provided before the end of this week. A company representative mentioned that the Android 2.3 update for the Xperia X10 could be provided during w30 (Week 30) i.e. 25th July to 31st July.

It is however quite unclear if this is in reference only to the unlocked X10 handsets, or the contracted versions that is found in other countries. The fact that Sony Ericsson is ready to roll out the update this week seems pretty enticing, though it is quite possible that there could be an indefinite delay for the update to finally roll out. However, you might just get the update before others if you turn out to be lucky.

The Xperia X10 was launched with Android 1.6 Donut, but an Android 2.1 update was provided after the launch. SE had angered users when it had initially announced that it will not provide the Gingerbread update for the handset. It seems to have rethought the matter and finally announced in March that the 2.3 update will indeed be rolled out for X10 handsets. Features such as Facebook Inside Xperia will come to the handset, bringing deep social networking integration. All in all the transition from Eclair to Gingerbread is going to be a very pleasant one for the users. The update could be rolled out any time from now. Fingers crossed.

Review: Philips CushionSpeaker

A must-have product, if money is no object for convenience.

SmileSurprisingly loud; Extremely comfortable; Excellent heat insulation; Hassle-free cable management; Packs in a USB audio device; Very convenient
Sad smileExpensive; Lacks rake; Heavy; Loses tonal balance at maximum volume

Philips CushionSpeaker
Price: Rs 3999

Entertainment for kids in the early 90s meant pooling lunch money to rent tapes of Peter Jackson classics such as Braindead and Bad Taste. Back then, movies meant huddling in front of the bulky CRT TV set during summer vacations. In this age of Youtube, the TV and VCR have been miniaturised into laptops that can fit in a backpack. It's possible to use a notebook PC on the lap, sofa, or the bed, but the weak inbuilt speakers render dialogues incomprehensible. Laptop speakers are of no use either; unless, of course, you're Prince Goro and have an extra pair of spare hands to hold them. Despite all the technological advancement, watching movies still constrains one to the desk. That is, until Philips decided it had enough and made the CushionSpeaker.
It's A Cusion, It's A Speaker, It's  A Philips!
The CushionSpeaker is just what the name says - a cushion and a speaker. It is a comfortably plaint foam cushion with a hard, flat top that's large enough to accommodate laptops of any size. A horizontal grille runs across the front lip, which houses a pair of speakers of unspecified power output. The speakers hook up to your notebook PC through a USB cable emerging from a hole at the back of the cushion. These speakers are meant for laptop users wishing to experience movies and music away from the desk, without the hassles of unwieldy external speakers and cumbersome headphones. The whole shebang sounds simple enough, but the devil is in the details. The speakers are driven by neodymium magnets, which make them surprisingly loud. The hard top is sticky enough to arrest laptop rubber feet remarkably well. I could lean back and angle my HP Pavilion DM1Z to about 30 degrees without it sliding onto my belly. Ditto for an older, heavier 15.6" Dell notebook. Even if your laptop's rubber feet are ruined or otherwise slippery, Philips includes chunky replacement feet that can be stuck onto its base.
Pillow Talk
The CushionSpeaker has an inbuilt USB audio device, which delivers plug-and-play convenience and total independence from your laptop's audio hardware. It connects through a 0.5 m cable housed in a nifty self-winding mechanism. The hassle-free cable management system also allows the retractable spool to lock the cable in place after every few inches. This way, the spring tension doesn't yank it off the port. Fortunately, the cable is long enough to reach all USB ports with ease.

The hard top surface may not have a fan to cool the laptop, but it ensures optimum movement of air underneath the laptop. That's much better than having the vents blocked by clothing or bed sheets. I recommend installing the bundled rubber feet, as they deliver better ground clearance and hence improved airflow. The foam cushion is thick and strikes a perfect balance between softness and support. The CushionSpeaker is fashioned out of a heat resistant material, which is evident with the total heat insulation it delivers. If one were to nitpick, I would say that its half kg heft and a lack of inclination are its only flaws design-wise.Small Size, Big Sound
It's obvious that these speakers will not beat your desktop speakers - they aren't meant to either. They're designed to be louder and better than the inbuilt laptop speakers, striking a middle ground between performance and convenience. The loudness of the CushionSpeaker took me by complete surprise. Movies that were nigh-inaudible with the inbuilt speakers at full blast, would convey the slightest whisper with great aural authority on this device. This is despite the volume being cranked up to just 50%. While it would be foolish to expect a full dynamic range, the Philips surprised me with its performance. To be honest, I would personally prefer these speakers over using ear \ headphones for the two-hour runtime of a film.
Musically, the CushionSpeaker shows admirable tonal balance till the 80% mark, after which it gets a tad too bright for comfort. Apart from the tonal imbalance, I didn't notice much distortion at maximum volume, which the manual warned me of. Bass response isn't exactly tight, but it's good enough to convey the infrasonic frequencies without any clipping, distortion, or cabinet resonance. Yes, you inevitably do lose out on the minute details that make headphones or dedicated stereo speakers good, but it's still decent enough for casual listening. Both the loudness and musicality of this device exhibits a competence beyond its size and nature. Quality-wise, the CushionSpeaker lies between proper desktop speakers and inbuilt \ entry-level laptop speakers.A Specialised Beast
The only major flaw of this device is its price. At an MRP of Rs 3999, this is prohibitively expensive. Once can argue that that the same price will fetch an excellent pair of headphones or speakers, so why bother? That's mostly because it would be akin to saying that an Armani suit is a better choice than a wetsuit. This would be true if you were to attend a party, but not if you plan to go scuba diving. The CushionSpeaker similarly serves a much specialised purpose - to deliver a louder, fuller sound while maintaining the portability of the laptop, and it does the same with great competence. If you want to enjoy movies and music on your lap, couch, or the bed, go for it by all means.

Apple To Launch A White iPod touch?

Elusive white media player may be on the horizon as leaked photos appear.

Apple's long awaited white iPhone 4 had caused quite a stir, and now a website has posted photos of what appears to be a white version of the fifth generation iPod touch.
The website 9to5Mac, which posted the photos of the front panel of the device, have stated that while they cannot confirm the legitimacy of the photos, they do seem to fall in line with fourth generation iPod touch's build. These photos can therefore be of a scrapped white iPod touch 4 or even a fifth generation version of the same. It has cited Concord Security analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's earlier claim that a white iPod touch will be launched to be pretty accurate. Kuo had stated in the report that the new device will have a form factor similar to that of the fourth generation iPod touch.
The website cites iOS SDK data to infer that the new device will have more of internal changes than external ones. The new iPod touch could get a dual-core A5 processor and an upgraded camera. The website adds that Apple may be only considering the idea of a white model for the device, but might never actually release one.
The white iPhone 4 was released after a long delay of 10 months at the end of April this year because it was found to be more of a challenge than the black model. In an earlier interview, Apple's Phil Schiller had stated, "It's not as simple as making something white. There's a lot more that goes into both the material science of it and how it holds up over time but also in how it all works with the sensors".Considering the fact that Apple did bring out the white iPhone 4 after all, we think that a white iPod touch in the near future is a possibility. Be it white or black, it is a matter of personal choice at the end and we think there is too much of an unnecessary mess being made about the colour of the device.

Now Access Nokia Maps From Android And iOS Devices

Nokia
once used to be a dominant player in terms of cellphones in global markets. However, those days aren't upon the company going through a seemingly unrecoverable crisis today. After the company's announcement to tie up with Microsoft to manufacture WP7 phones under its belt, things started to seem much better. That being said, the company is still incurring losses which isn't a good sign. However, if there is one thing that has been working for the Finnish mobile maker, it has to be the it's Maps Service.
Nokia Maps has considerably raised the stakes and it's quite hard to match the standards set by Nokia in that regard. Now, Nokia is spreading the Maps service across top mobile platforms with the company announcing the compatibility of Nokia Maps on the iOS and Android platform with location support on both platforms. To access the Nokia Maps service, users of the above two mobile platforms will have to head over to the default HTML5 enabled browsers and type maps.nokia.com in the address bar and access the service. Though, the HTML5 version launched in April is currently in Beta, do not expect anything less from Nokia Maps. The best part of this service is that this doesn't require a snappy Wi-Fi or 3G connection; a regular GPRS connection will suffice. iOS and Android users can certainly benefit from this HTML5 version of Nokia Maps as have millions of Nokia users across the world. It would have been a touch better though if Nokia rolled out a dedicated app for all the platforms. It has also been reported that Nokia will roll out many apps like these for the WP7 platform (accessible for all WP7 devices), which should be very interesting as well.

Beetel Teletech To Launch A 7" Tablet Next Month

This Froyo tablet is expected to be priced moderately.

There aren't a lot of tablets available in India today, though some Honeycomb tablets are gradually making their way into the country. With the likes of Honeycomb tablets such as the Acer Iconia Tab, the Motorola XOOM and other 10.1" tabs showing up in the market, it will be really interesting to have a 7 incher in the market; something similar to the HTC Flyer perhaps. Now, Indian fixed line equipment manufacturer Beetel Teletech (which belongs to the Bharti Group) will be rolling out a new 7" Android tablet in the country next month.
This tablet will be running on Android 2.2 Froyo and will come with features such as 3G, Wi-Fi, cameras on the front and back and more. Rahul Mahajan, the Head of Beetel Teletech gave out this info while speaking to press persons. However, information regarding the pricing of the tablet remains scarce since he preferred not to disclose that information. He did mention that the tablets will be priced competitively. It is very crucial that the tablet is priced economically since it doesn't have a lot of features to brag about.
The company also mentioned its plans to roll out four new handsets over the course of this year including a bunch of Android handsets. Mahajan said, "We will build a strong distribution network. The company will launch four more models, including high-end, touchscreen and Android-enabled handsets, by September".
Beetel Teletech's GD 218 and GD 310 are entry-level feature phones with dual SIM standby and a couple of other useful features such as LED torch, FM Radio, etc. These handsets will be priced at Rs. 1,499 and 1,799 respectively. The company aims to launch at least two new handsets every month. Beetel Teletech wants to go big in the Indian entry-level and mid-range handset market by 2013. With the entry-level cellphone market crowded with brands such Micromax, Maxx, Videocon, and a bunch of others, Beetel Teletech will really have a tough task pleasing the customers.

Best Free Video Calling Apps For Android

Android is currently the fastest growing mobile platform and the main reason for that is that it is Open Source, giving greater flexibility to application developers. While a lot of Android phones do have a secondary front camera meant to be used in video calling, it was never really put to use until recently. The reason was that the platform did not have native support for video calling until the introduction of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, even as Google is working on Android 2.3.4 to bring native support for the same to be used via Google Talk. Until then, here is our pick of apps that will facilitate video calling on your Android phone for free. Please bear in mind that video calling through each of these apps works over Wi-Fi as well as 3G, and data charges will be applicable according to the data plan you have opted for.
Yahoo! Messenger
Current Version: 1.4
Size: 2.4 MB
Requirements: Android 2.0.1 and above. One of the oldest IMs around, and with most people already having a Yahoo! id, Yahoo! Messenger is the ideal app to start off with. While it does support front facing camera, you may find that it does not allow you to do so on some devices. In such cases, you can easily use the rear camera to make a video call (even if it may mean that you will have to stand in front of a mirror to make a call). Since the app does not natively support video chat, you are required to install the video plug-in from the Android Market to make video calls. This app is still in beta, so we can expect better video calling support (without you having to install an additional plug-in), in future versions. In addition to making video calls, you can chat with your buddies on Yahoo!, Windows Live, and Facebook, share photos and videos, or even send free international SMS.
Qik Video Connect
Current Version: 0.08.43
Size: 4.5 MB
Requirements: Android 2.1 and above.Qik Video Connect is an awesome app for video calling because it was built from the ground up with that in mind. Just like with other IM services, you are required to sign up for free with Qik to use this app. This app sports a very clean interface with the video of the other party occupying almost the entire screen (with support for up to VGA resolution) and your video in the top left corner. One of the highlights of this service is the ability to make video calls to iDevice users. Yet another feature is Video Mail, where you can send or receive video messages if the other party is offline, though sending is no longer available for free, receiving remains free. Similarly, you can share live videos to Facebook, Twitter, and a few other social networks.
Fring Group Video Calls, Chat
Current Version: 3.1.1.1
Size: 5.5 MB
Requirements: Android 1.5 and above. This is the Android version of the already popular mobile IM app, and it supports video calling. Just like in the previous app, you need to sign up for free to be able to make free voice and video calls to your friends. Fring also supports calling to iDevice users.Using what it calls DVQ (Dynamic Video Quality) technology, it senses and adjusts video quality according to your internet connection, trying to ensure a smooth video calling experience. One of its unique features is group video call, using which you can simultaneously have up to 4 participants in a video conference. Fring can also be used to make calls to regular phones around the world at a small price when compared to regular call rates.
Tango Voice & Video Calls
Current Version: 1.6.10456
Size: 4.8 MB
Requirements: Android 2.1 and above.Tango is simple and easy-to-use app for making video calls through your Android phone. Once installed, it pulls contacts your phone's list and creates a list of contacts already using Tango, thus saving you the trouble of doing the same. This app requires no log in or password; it creates an account within seconds, just by associating it with your phone number. You can invite friends to use this app by SMS and email facility right through the app. Free calls can be made even to iOS devices, and a call started as a voice call can be switched to video call mode by simply touching the camera icon near the top right corner of the screen.
Skype
Current Version: 2.0.0.47
Size: 9.7 MB
Requirements: Android 2.1 and above. While Skype was there since long, it enabled video calling feature only recently. Nevertheless, this app has got the finesse you would expect of a mature professional app, and you get that for free. Skype allows you to make free Skype-to-Skype video calls, while calling to phones is available at rates considerably lower than standard telephone call ratesCurrently, two-way video calling is supported on the following handsets: Google Nexus S, HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo,and Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro. Samsung Galaxy S owners have to upgrade their handset to Android v2.2 to be able to run Skype. Future versions will extend support for more handsets.
